What Is A Removable Denture?

A removable partial denture is a kind of replacement helpful for patients with some missing teeth. It consists of false replacement teeth and supporting tissues and has a pink plastic base. It is also known RPD. It can be removed and worn again by the patient without the help of a dentist.

 It is a good option for people who cannot have fixed partial dentures due to some specific reasons. Removable partial dentures do not lie completely on the gap of the missing teeth like complete dentures. It has clasps of metals that can be clipped on the remaining teeth for stability.

What Are The Different Parts Of Removable Partial Dentures?

The removable partial dentures consist of the following parts:
  1. Lingual Bar: It is the main metal connector of the dentures and has a U shape.
  2. Small Connectors: The small erect metal bar that emerges from the lingual bar act as small connectors of the false teeth.
  3. Direct Retainers: These are metal bars that hold the teeth snugly and emerge from the lingual bar.
  4. Indirect Retainers: The clasp that joins the pink base to the metal framework of the denture is an indirect retainer.
  5. Base: The base of the denture is made of a pink plastic or acrylic material that looks like the gums and other, other soft tissues of the mouth.
  6. Teeth: The false teeth of the denture is made of plastic or porcelain and is made in the shape of real teeth.

Why Do People Opt For Removable Partial Dentures?

People who lose all their teeth opt for complete dentures, but people who have some of their natural teeth may opt for partial dentures to improve their smile as a mouth with missing teeth can be a cause of discomfort and embarrassment. Apart from this people may opt for partial dentures for the following reasons: 
  • Sometimes patients do not have posterior teeth needed for supporting the fixed partial dentures. So these patients have to opt for removable partial dentures.
  • Removable partial dentures are recommended according to the age of the patients. For example, partial dentures are usually suggested to the patient's below the age of seventeen as they have large dental pulp and lack crown height required for fixed partial dentures.

    A removable denture is also suggested to very old patients as they have reduced life expectancy and they may not be keen on investing money on expensively fixed dentures.
  • Some people have weak periodontal membrane due to periodontal disease. These people are preferably given removable partial dentures as fixed dentures need good periodontal support to transfer the load of the teeth to the underlying bone. Partial removal dentures don't need much periodontal support.
  • Severe Bone Loss: When there is excessive bone loss due to trauma or periodontal disease then it is very difficult to fix artificial teeth of fixed partial dentures in the correct place. The base of the removable partial denture can be fabricated easily to support the artificial teeth.
  • Aesthetic: The base of the removable partial dentures mimic the periodontal tissues and teeth emerging naturally from the gingiva, providing good aesthetics. It also gives good support to the lip and cheek and establishes the natural look of the face.
  • Patients with special medical and psychological conditions: Removable dentures are also advised to patients with serious physical and psychological problems.

    Fixed partial dentures are tedious, and doctors, as well as patients, do not want to invest time, money and effort needed for fabricating them.Removable partial dentures are easier to fabricate, and they need short time. It is less demanding for the patients already having health issues.
Patients Wishes: Sometimes patients opt for removable dentures for the following reasons:
  • They cannot opt for fixed dentures due to financial reasons as fixed dentures are expensive.
  • Patients who want to avoid operative procedures opt for removable partial dentures.

When Are Partial Removable Dentures Avoided?

Dr. Roman Fedorciw, a Middletown Dentist, recommends avoiding the removable partial dentures under the following circumstances: 
  • Patients with large tongue may have problems with the removable partial dentures as they might push the denture away with their tongue.
  • Mentally disabled people cannot keep removable dentures in their mouth for very long.
  • Those who cannot maintain proper oral hygiene and clean their dentures should avoid removable partial dentures.
  • A removable partial denture is a very popular prosthodontic device which helps the patients with missing teeth. Not only does it help the patients to eat their food properly, but they also improve their confidence by replacing missing teeth and improving their smile.
