Accelerated Overnight Orthokeratology is a procedure during which custom specially made, inflexible; gas permeable molds are worn every night on the cornea.
So, What Is CRT?
Corneal refractive therapy is corneal reshaping through the use of overnight lenses designed only for your eye measurements. People who wear glasses or lenses regularly know the hassle and the uncomfortable situations they sometimes get into when they forget their instruments, it is also difficult for them to drive especially for people with high power – they sometimes do not even get a permit!

What Eye Conditions Does It Solve?
Mostly, it is used to treat myopia and is primarily in kids below 15. It can also be used to solve refractive errors like astigmatism, presbyopia and hyperopia. A full 20/20 vision is generally expected from this procedure. People with extreme eyesight power can also receive 20/40 vision through CRT.
The Procedure Of The Treatment
- Your Optometrist will first scan your eye and take its measurements. Then he will match the size and fitting of your lenses so that it is a perfect match for your eye. CRT will reshape your cornea, so you do not have to rely on lenses during the day in a non-invasive (nonsurgical), fast, easy and cost-friendly manner.
- So rather than using your contact lenses in the morning, and pulling them out at night, these CRT lenses are put on at night for 6-8 hours and removed in the morning.
- These contact lens devices softly and slowly reshape your eyes during your sleep. Most people have vast improvements in the first couple of days and gain their best vision in 10 days to about two weeks.
- Therefore once you get your complete vision back, these lenses still have to be work as they act as retainers for your eyes, so you don't have to rely on glasses or lenses during the day while working or doing any other activity.
- Research has shown that CRT also slows down the advancement of any eye disorders than its current state so regards prescription updates are unnecessary!
- This treatment is most effective on children and teenagers as they hold the results for longer periods of time. But it's approved for all age limits for the young and the adult crowd, and unlike laser treatments that are only allowed for adults and have age restrictions, CRT can be used to help adolescents and small kids too.
- Corneal Refractive Therapy is one of the best and latest non-surgical, reversible treatments with very low-risk factors.
- Now, the moment your lenses are taken off the next morning, your readjusted and reshaped cornea will allow light to focus on the retina in perfect alignment so you can walk freely without anything on your eyes throughout the day.
- Disinfection of your lenses chemically after each use is recommended and find out from your doctor about how long they last.
Advantages
- There is no requirement to wear spectacles or contact lenses during the daytime. You are free to explore.
- Can be updated regularly to improve results.
- Nonsurgical procedure.
- Very cost effective compared to refractive surgery.
- It is a reversible process- your normal eyesight is back in about 72 hours after you stop using these lenses.
- CRT also slows down the worsening of nearsightedness compared to standard contact lenses or glasses.
- CRT doesn't cause post-treatment pains like in laser surgery.
Disadvantages
- Lenses should be worn all throughout every night to maintain the shape of the cornea.
- Complete correction isn't achieved.
- Longer time to notice visible results.
- High initial cost compared to lenses and glasses and only available for myopia currently.
Risks
There is a small risk involved when any contact lens is worn. It is not hoped for that the contact lenses for corneal refractive therapy will produce the danger that is bigger than other contact lenses. Fluctuating or blurry vision are possible side effects of CRT.
Finally, always and always take care of your eye at all times and do not use electronics for long periods! Dr. Durocher, a Nashville Optometrist, suggests that corneal therapy must be availed under experienced and trusted optometrists.
